This beautiful Baroque golden mirror is made in France, circa 1850.
The frame has an arched top and is enriched with intricate decorations. The mirror has an ornate crest with a central medallion flanked by two angels or putti and acanthus and floral elements. On both outer sides, finials are placed in the form of vases with flames on top. The most elevated part of the frame is decorated with a repetitive décor of acanthus and floral motifs. The glass is surrounded by a Classic pearl beading. The whole frame is gold leaf gilt. The gold is of exceptional strong quality and is nearly intact as the day the mirror was made. Some parts are polished more than others. The reason was two-fold, the more the gold was polished, the more glossy it became. The more the gold was polished, the more the red undercoat shined through the gold and enhanced the gold color. The combination of high gloss/low gloss and the warm red undertone along with the rich patina built up over the years makes this a truly special piece.

Condition details: The mirror is in very good authentic condition. The right arm of the right putti was missing and two very small spots on both left and right outer molding were repaired. The silver nitrate silvered mirror plate is authentic to the mirror and has two light spots on the lower section. The glass has a few hardly visible scratches. The glass is in very good condition for a piece of glass over 150 years old. The pine back cladding to protect the glass is authentic to piece as well. Both back cladding and glass were removed from the frame and all parts were gently cleaned throughout. The glass was firmly reinserted and the piece is now ready for use.
