Originating from the autonomous region between France and Spain known as the Basque Country, this oak kutxa trunk was hand-carved in the late 1700s. In the Basque language, kutxa translates to “box”, which is an apt description for this very large, well-carved trunk. Both sides are adorned with a square rosette with raised chamfered petals. Two similar carvings grace the front façade, but these motifs are arranged in a circular pinwheel fashion. In between are a series of geometric carvings of a rectangle with canted sides set within a circle and the still-functioning iron hasp . The tall block legs provide a high profile, with the front two legs embellished with a repeating foliate motif. A perfect bedroom accessory for storing blankets, pillows, or linens, our kutxa trunk can also be used in a living room, hallway, or bathroom.
