This 17th century hand carved red polychrome and gilded wood lantern, mounted on a pole with a lion paw base, represents the highest standards of craftsmanship. This very large lantern probably graced a sweeping hall in an aristocratic Venetian Palazzo with frescoed walls and ceilings surrounded by sumptuous artwork. Grand lanterns such as this with lavishly carved decoration were created in pure 17th century Baroque style.
Good antique condition with original polychrome. Small split in the base. Two finials are missing.
One window frame is broken.
