Nice large scale. Books are laid open across the backs of the doves’ wings, supported by the giltwood scrolled element atop the doves’ tails (as shown in the images). The pair most likely were made to accommodate new and old testament readings in a church. Sold together and priced as a pair for $7,800.

Note: Original/early finish on antique and vintage metal will include some, or all, of the following: patina, scaling, light rust, discoloration, and corrosion. Regional differences in humidity and climate during shipping may cause antique and vintage wood to shrink and/or split along its grain, veneer to loosen and/or peel, and painted finishes and gilt to crack and flake.

This graceful and exceptionally well-carved figure was likely part of an altar ensemble. The eyes and face are particularly well-formed and have a subtly plaintive expression. The wings are covered in actual gold gilt and the body in a gauche of natural mineral pigments. There is a real sense of movement in this piece, which we believe dates to the Baroque period.

the Child Christ standing firmly on the earth, his arm raised heaven ward.

Normally these pieces were made of glass or metal, so that those made of hard stones, as in this particular case, corresponded to the highest artistic quality trousseaus. Aesthetically the work combines the sobriety of the classic form with an expressive veining characteristic of the material.

Carved monogrammed initials “HPP” + Family Crest, origin: Gudbrandsdal, Norway, circa 1740

Very similar carving to the travel box from Gudbrandsdal, dated to 1700, Kunstindustrimuseet, Oslo

The years between 1740 and 1780 are the greatest significance in Gudbrandsdal carving for it was during this time that the renowned døleskurd was developed. By 1700 the vine becomes thick and ribbon-like with simple, slightly curled leaved intertwining in medieval fashion. The leaves are more and more scrolled, more like the acanthus, culminating in the rich baroque type of carving, the døleskurd. Gudbrandsdal was a well-to-do district, homes large and well-furnished. Even the smaller objects, things such as the mangletrœr and œsker were often decorated with lavish carving characteristics of the district.
