These beautifully carved high back William & Mary side chairs were created at the end of the sixteenth century c. 1690. The intricate carving of the legs, stretchers snd backs are indications of high quality. The 18th century hand forged irons that repair a long ago broken stretcher indicate the high value that was placed upon these chairs. The center splat is an intricately carved flower cartouche which is surmounted by a carved ribbon crest. The finely detailed legs include carved hips and spurs over hoofed feet. The scrolling center stretcher is further detailed with carved acanthus leaves. Seventeenth century chairs of this quality and condition are uncommon. These chairs would integrate well into a Spanish, Italian or even Moroccan interior–or as pieces of sculpture in a contemporary home.
